Contractors remodeling homes must be lead certified

4/16/2010

Effective April 22, 2010, contractors remodeling homes built before 1978 must be a Certified Lead Contractor.    It is a mandatory federal law.

According to the EPA, lead is dangerous to children, impeding their brains and nervous system development.   Lead can be absorbed by breathing or ingesting.  Children tend to absorb more lead because they often put their hands and items in their mouth.

Lead is also dangerous to adults.  Risks include suffering from reproductive issues, nerve disorders, concentration problems, high blood pressure, joint pain, and more.

There is a shortage of certified trainers so it is expected there will be some contractors not in compliance with the law.    One report estimated 14,000 contractors have been certified but there are 200,000 that need the certification.    The certification does not just cover remodelers  but other contractors such as plumbers, heating and air conditioning workers,  carpenters,  and window installers.
